Blueberry Blucrop: variety description, care and planting
Among the stable and fast-growing varieties of blueberries, lovers and farmers are especially valued Blucrop. It has long and deservedly become a reference, and on an industrial scale they plant whole hectares of land. Blucrop does not cause trouble during planting and further care, so it is great for beginners. And we have already prepared a description for you and its main features!
Description and characteristics of the variety
The hybrid was bred by American breeders in the early thirties. After a long planting of experimental seeds and careful selection, it was possible to obtain ideal bushes with the desired characteristics. But it took almost twenty years to prepare and bring to mind, so Blueberry came on sale only in 1952.
Blucrop is a tall variety with sprawling bushes up to 1.9 m dotted with dark elongated leaves. Large berries up to 2.2 cm are slightly flattened and grow in heavy clusters. They have a mild, sweet taste that may even seem too mundane. And if the bush does not thin out in time, acid and astringency are manifested.
The berries of Blyukrop do not crumple during transportation, are well stored and are suitable for freezing. They will not suffer at all during automated cleaning due to dense pulp and peel. The productivity of one bush ranges from 4 to 9 kg, depending on age and conditions.
Wonderful hedges form from Blueberry Blueberries, because it is very decorative. In autumn, the bush turns red, and even shoots turn brown - this continues until winter. And since May, it is covered with small whitish bell flowers with fancifully curved petals.
Blueberry Care Bluecrop
Experts recommend that beginners grow Blueberry blueberries, because it is very difficult to miscalculate here. She almost does not get sick and is not afraid of pests, suffers mild cooling and drought, does not cause trouble.
Blueberry gives an ideal crop of blueberries at a temperature of about +25 degrees. This is a winter-hardy variety that does not freeze to -40 degrees, but in cold regions it is better to insulate it for the winter. In the spring, the ovaries do not suffer from sharp cooling down to -7 degrees, which guarantees a stable and predictable yield.
Blueberries prefer sunny elevations, and Bluecrop is no exception. So the fruits will be larger and sweeter, and the shrub will grow faster. But specifically, this variety is easily adaptable to partial shading.
Blueberry Bluecrop prefers plentiful and regular watering, but does not tolerate marshland and too humid climate. In this case, it is almost impossible to avoid fungal infections. In summer, bushes are watered every 2-3 days, but take into account weather conditions. A sure sign of lack of water is shriveled small berries.
Bluecrop less than other varieties of blueberries suffers from improper soil, the main thing is good drainage. The variety is resistant to chlorosis and wilting caused by inappropriate conditions. But still, the acidity of the soil is the most important criterion, and for Blucrop it should be about 4.5.
Blueberries need generous nitrogen fertilizing to build green mass and develop a tall shrub. But they need to be stopped by the second half of summer, so that Bluecourt has time to prepare for the winter. Otherwise, it is enough to use complex fertilizers in the spring.
At home, Blucrop is propagated by cuttings from young twigs. Be sure to treat the slice with stimulants, because they root badly and for a long time. It is best to use a greenhouse with a stable temperature and light.
You can propagate the bush by layering from young shoots buried in the ground. First you need to remove all leaves from this place, make a small incision on the cortex and treat with antiseptics. This method is faster, because under favorable conditions, the seedling can be separated in a month.
Blueberries Bluecrop self-pollinates, but if other varieties are available, the crop will be better. With cross-pollination, more ovaries form, and they grow stronger. By the way, Blucrop is an excellent honey variety that attracts bees to the garden.
From the second year, Blueberry Blueberries must be cut and thinned. If the bush branches heavily, the shoots simply can not withstand the load and break during the ripening of the crop. In addition, this increases the risk of developing various diseases. The height of the bush should be within 2 m, and the width within 1.7 m.
The berries of Blyukrop ripen for a long time, and it is very convenient for amateur gardeners, because you can always enjoy a fresh harvest from the bush. But on an industrial scale, this is not so good, because it will complicate the assembly process. Harvested from late July to mid-August, 55 days after the beginning of flowering.
In the harsh northern regions, even winter-hardy varieties of blueberries are better insulated for the winter. The principle is the same as with vineyards and other berries: you need to slightly bend the branches and wrap them with agrotextile, spruce branches or corn.
Planting Blueberry Bluecrop
It is more convenient to plant Bluecrop blueberries immediately in containers - so you will not damage the root system. Bushes grow healthier and give a more abundant crop. One and two year old seedlings are suitable for planting.
Dig a hole 50x50x50 cm or a whole trench under several bushes. Immediately form a peat substrate with coniferous sawdust, add humus and 30 g nitroammofoski. For soil with close occurrence of groundwater, Blueberry blueberries are planted on the ridge, and then they are buried and mulched above the soil level.
Blucrop Diseases and Pests
Modern Blucrop is very resistant to diseases and pests. But do not forget to timely treat the bushes with insecticides and fungicides. Remember that blueberries have a sensitive, superficial root system, so that concentrated pesticides should not fall onto it.
The most common diseases are of fungal origin. These are mummification of berries, coccomycosis, gray rot, anthracnose, other mycoses and sporoses. For prevention, remove the scavenger and damaged branches in time, thin out the bush, monitor humidity and periodically update the mulch.
